ABOUT MICHAEL A. HUBBARD

My strategic intention is to use my camera to unlock the world, to open unexplored expressions, and to build new and exciting relationships that reveal real human emotion.

Photographer Michael Hubbard was born in Halifax, VA to George and Inez Hubbard (a tobacco farmer and a house wife).  Growing up in rural Southside Virginia provided Michael with a direct view and respect for nature, family, and community. Michael was 1st introduced to photography in eighth grade when he joined the 8th grade photography club at Halifax County Middle School. From his first oatmeal box camera, to a 126mm, to a 110 Instamatic and finally a Minolta 35mm at the age of 15, photography became his passion. Herman Younger, his grandfather and 1st sponsor, was the 1st to believe in Michael’s photography skills. This passion lead to Michael attend college and graduate with a degree in Art-Photography, Communication and Electrical Engineering Technology from Oakwood Collage and Alabama A&M University in 1986. During this time Michael meet Bobby Harrison who became his photography teacher, mentor, and friend.

After working as a college photographer and Assistant Director of College Relations, Michael pursued a master’s degree in Media Technology from the University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout). He paid his tuition by teaching photography classes as a graduate assistant. Under the leadership of Dr. Terry Ingram at UW-Stout, Michael realized how much he really loved teaching. After graduating, he returned to Oakwood to teach photography, art and video production. In 1990, David Person (Oakwood College friend) arranged a summer faculty photography internship at the Huntsville Times. This internship changed his view of the world and encouraged him to reach deep inside for the real meaning of humanity in each image.  In 1991, Michael was appointed as a Media Technologist at Oak Ridge Associated Universities and worked on many diverse media projects. Then in 2000, Michael taught Art Appreciation and Digital Video Production at Austin Peay State University.   Michael has had many different jobs in education and media over the years. The one common thread between all of them is that he has found ways to incorporate media as value into his work.

Currently Michael is an Assistant professor in the Department of Communications at Tennessee State University (TSU).  Prior to joining TSU, he served as the Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement at South Carolina State University and Executive Director of the South Carolina State University Education Foundation and worked closely with the Board of Visitors.   Prior to joining SC State, he served as group manager for Science and Engineering Education Programs (SEP) at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).

Michael is a graduate of Leadership Oak Ridge and the East Tennessee Regional Leadership Association. He earned a master’s degree in media technology from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and a bachelor of general studies in communication, art-photography and electrical engineering technology from Oakwood College and Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Ala.  Michael lives with his wife Daphne and three sons in Hendersonville, TN.
